Observed vs Theoretical RTP
Theoretical RTP is the return a game’s maths is designed to pay over a huge number of rounds. Observed RTP is the return recorded in a specific published window - past data only, not a forecast for the next spin.

Short definitions
Theoretical RTP (studio)
The long-run expected return from the game’s certified model. Studios often publish this as advertised or declared RTP. It describes the design, not one short session.
Observed RTP (live window)
Payouts divided by stakes, times 100, for a defined published period from a studio feed we show. It describes that past window only.
Why the numbers diverge
- Finite samples wander. Short windows are noisy; a rare big win can move the percentage a lot.
- Window length matters. A 1-minute figure is not the same signal as 1 hour or 7 days - never treat them as interchangeable.
- Some titles ship at more than one theoretical RTP. An operator’s config can differ from the figure next to a row.
- Observed above 100% in a window means payouts exceeded stakes in that dataset. It does not mean the next session will.
How rtpfeed labels rows
We show observed when a studio publishes a live feed we ingest - for example BGaming Hub 7-day stats, and Playin OSS short windows for listed providers (including NoLimit City, NetEnt, Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming where that feed applies).
We show theoretical when only studio maths is public - for example Yggdrasil and Endorphina rows where rtpObserved is empty. Those rows stay labelled theoretical; we do not call them live.
Each row carries its own window or theo label. Do not mix signals across rows or windows.

What this page is not
RTPFeed is not a casino. We do not offer accounts, deposits, bonuses, or “play now” tips. Hot and Cold on the board mean above or below theoretical in that window - not a forecast and not advice to gamble.
Signal cheat-sheet
| Signal | What it is | Use it for | Don’t use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theoretical | Studio long-run model | Understanding the designed return | Predicting the next spin |
| Observed | Payouts ÷ stakes in a published window | Seeing what that window returned | Treating one window as “due” or as advice |
| Vs theoretical | Observed minus theo for that same window | Spotting above/below in this window | Comparing across different window lengths |
FAQ
What’s the difference between observed and theoretical RTP?
Theoretical RTP is the return the game’s maths is built for over a huge number of rounds. Observed RTP is what a specific published live window actually returned. One is design; the other is a past sample.
Why doesn’t observed match the theoretical number?
Short windows are volatile, window lengths differ, and some games run at more than one theo config. A finite sample will usually sit above or below the long-run figure for a while.
Can observed RTP predict the next spin?
No. Observed figures describe the past window only. They are not a forecast for the next round or session.
Why do some rtpfeed rows only show theoretical?
Those studios publish maths, not a live window we ingest. We label those rows theoretical and leave observed empty (n/a) rather than inventing a live figure.
